The number of same-sex couples reported in Australia has risen by 39% according to 2016 census data released today from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The census data reported that there are now nearly 47,000 same-sex couples in Australia who are roughly equal across men and women.
The Equality Campaign Executive Director, Tiernan Brady said, “The census figures show that there are tens of thousands of Australians in loving and committed same-sex relationships.
“These numbers are a powerful reminder that the issue of marriage equality is about real people who simply want the same status and dignity as every other Australian.
“It often proves too easy for this issue to be hijacked by politics, we need to remember that LGBTI people are our family members, friends and work colleagues.
Poll after poll consistently shows the majority of Australians support marriage equality because they believe every Australian deserves to be treated equally with the same dignity and respect.
“It is time our politicians worked together to deliver marriage equality in line with the wishes of the Australian people,” Tiernan Brady concluded.
